How Do You Prioritize?
Prioritization is the key to effective strategic life planning. Without it, you may find yourself overwhelmed with too many tasks and not enough time to accomplish them all. Prioritization helps you focus on the most important things in your life and ensures that you’re using your time and resources effectively.
It’s all about big rocks (BR) and little rocks (LR). By defining your big picture, long-term goals (big rocks) and your daily short-term goals (little rocks), you can learn how to prioritize and achieve them to live a purposeful and fulfilling life.
When I first started doing BR/LR assessments, I did it in December to prepare for the new year. I soon discovered that I was missing out on advanced planning by not preparing early enough for the new fiscal year that starts in October. Therefore, I moved my annual assessments to September so I could prepare for the fiscal year starting in October. I also still do it in December to prepare for the new calendar year.
I still review my list every quarter to see if anything major needs to be adjusted. I also use a monthly tracker of events for the whole year, where I include the big rocks/little rocks I carry so I can see if I am on track.
I cannot stress enough the importance of prioritization in strategic life planning. In part three, you will find tips and tools on how to prioritize your life, and the perspective of big rocks and little rocks will play a major role in this process.
